FebFast - Why bother?

Fundraisers are certainly not few and far between.  With almost every day of the year dedicated to one good cause or another, regular charity sporting events and Go Fund Me posts flooding our social media, you could be forgiven for not appreciating fundraisers as a reason to give up anything, even a bad habit or unhealthy vice.

Photo by Joanna Kosinska on UnsplashI'd go so far as to say, if you want to ignite your compassion and do something to help others, all you really need to do is open your purse strings and make a donation to any one of the various charities on offer.  So why the hype around FebFast?

Unlike DryJuly, FastFeb is a month where you can give up anything (not just alcohol) think sugar, chocolate, coffee, ciggies, swearing, or any vice of your choice, even sex (eeek!).  And you're helping raise much needed funds for disadvantaged youth aged 12 - 25 across Australia.  A very worthy cause to support ...but you still have to take time-out from something for a whole month.

Why bother giving anything up for a month and donate your hard earned cash for the privilege?  Heck, you could simply donate some cash and keep on doing what you're doing.  Let's face it, regardless of what you may choose to give up there is bound to be hardship along the way. No matter how strong you think you are there will be times when your brain intently insists on having what you've given up ...doesn't that bring on the cold sweats!

Well on the other hand you will reap the benefit of giving your body (or mind) a break.  You may end up losing weight, perhaps sleeping better, maybe even giving up a vice for good.  What if you pick up a new healthy habit along the way?  That can't be a bad thing, right?

You can get social with it and do it with friends, that always makes things easier.  Maybe you are just one of those fab freaks who can't say no to a challenge and can do ANYTHING, so long as it is presented as a challenge.  Or for some of us (like yours truly) you just know that it's time to take a much needed break from something unhealthy.  And you will probably save money - even with making a donation.

It's not just the raising of the much needed funds for those less fortunate but a time to put yourself to the test.  Imagine the glory and personal pride you will soak up as you cross the finish line?  That in itself is good enough for me!

Now let's not forget (even though it's a leap year) February is the shortest month so it's definitely the best time to dip your toe in.  And for those who just can't quite make it, you can purchase a 24 hour leave pass - with of course, all fees going to the FebFast charity.
Now I'm off to prep and psych myself up with a big glass of red, tomorrow the journey begins!

Is it worth it?  Only you can decide that one ...do it and find out!
